The next chapter of the Dutton family history books is coming sooner than you think
The first season of Yellowstone prequel 1923 moseyed off into the sunset in early 2023, but it's almost time to turn toward the horizon and find out what's next for the Dutton family. 1923, which stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton, the ancestors of Yellowstone's John Dutton, has been renewed for Season 2 on Paramount+. But like Spencer's (Brandon Sklenar) long journey from Africa back to Montana, 1923 has been on a long trek to return to our television screens.
While we wait, we know you have questions, like when 1923 Season 2 will premiere, what it will be about, and who will be in it. We're compiling everything we know about the next season.
Paramount+ dropped a whole bushel of information on 1923 Season 2 on Dec. 5, 2024, including the premiere date, a pair of teaser trailers, and first-look images. Check out all of those below.
Additionally, the Paramount family will be trying to get some of that sweet, robust Yellowstone audience by re-airing the first season of 1923 immediately following Yellowstone on Paramount Network, beginning Sunday, Dec. 8, and continuing with back-to-back episodes of 1923 once Yellowstone ends its run.
As one chapter of the Yellowstone franchise closes, with the flagship series airing its final episode at the end of 2024, another begins. 1923 Season 2 will premiere Feb. 23, 2025, on Paramount+, just shy of two years since the Season 1 finale aired on Feb. 26, 2023. The extended break between seasons was due largely to the actors and writers strikes for fair wages in 2023.
In December 2024, Paramount+ released a pair of short teaser trailers for Season 2, one focused on Spencer needing to return to Montana, and another focused on trouble at the ranch, with Jacob and Cara realizing they're under attack.
In early February 2023, and just four episodes into Season 1, Paramount+ renewed 1923 for Season 2. It was a surprise because 1883 did not get a second season, but two seasons were always in Taylor Sheridan's plan for 1923. It's also a no-brainer for a show starring Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, and a series that broke Paramount+ streaming records on its debut.
Each season of 1923 will consist of eight episodes. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in May 2023, many members of the cast expected Season 2 to be the last for 1923, bringing the series to a grand total of 16 episodes across both seasons. However, in Paramount+'s announcement of the Season 2 premiere date, there was no word on whether Season 2 will be the last season of 1923 or not.
Here's the official description for Season 2, straight from Paramount+: "In the second season of 1923, a cruel winter brings new challenges and unfinished business to Jacob and Cara back at Dutton ranch. With harsh conditions and adversaries threatening to end the Dutton legacy, Spencer embarks on an arduous journey home, racing against time to save his family in Montana. Meanwhile, Alexandra sets off on her own harrowing trans-Atlantic journey to find Spencer and reclaim their love."
While Season 1 takes place in 1923, there is no word yet on when Season 2 will be set. What we do know is that several months have already passed in Season 1, and much more time will likely go by as Spencer makes the long, long trip back to Montana.

TV Guide's Liam Mathews reviewed the 1923 series premiere, calling it "an ambitious undertaking with a ton of potential that will give fans of Yellowstone a series that at times feels familiar and other times feels like it's expanding what Yellowstone can be." Read the review.
The spin-off, which was originally titled 1932 before producers changed the year in which it's set, takes place during the Prohibition era following World War I, with Montana experiencing an economic collapse ahead of the Great Depression. This sets the story about 30 or 35 years before the birth of Kevin Costner's character, John Dutton III, and 40 years after the events of 1883.
The official show description reads, "1923 focuses on the Dutton family's next two generations as they struggle to survive historic drought, lawlessness and Prohibition, and an epidemic of cattle theft; all battled beneath the cloud of Montana's great depression, which preceded the nation by almost a decade."

1883 followed the Dutton family's journey across the plains to Montana and explained how they came to settle there instead of their original destination of Oregon. Before James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret (Faith Hill) could make it all the way to the Pacific Northwest, their teenage daughter, Elsa (Isabel May), was shot through the liver by a Lakota arrow. James took her to die in a picturesque Montana valley that then became the Dutton homestead. As 1923 begins, James and Margaret have tragically died, and James' brother Jacob and his wife Cara have come to care for the ranch and for nephews John and Spencer. Spencer, a WWI veteran, has moved to Africa to hunt big game, while John has remained on the ranch, intending to take over for Jacob.
Here are the cast members whose characters survived the first season. Ford and Mirren have confirmed they will return for Season 2.
1923 streams exclusively on Paramount+, just like 1883.
Yellowstone airs on Paramount Network and streams on Peacock.
